Tim,
cant edit my earlier mssg to add
just reread the whole thread - you mentioned a 'Kelly' trigger in one of the mssgs -
do you know of one I could buy to try and see whether it is better than a 5039?
(Can't help it - the grass is always greener …. hehe)

Hi Gunter,
I thought 0.2mm sounded a bit tight.
I'm not sure if a Kelly is better than a 5039. I've never actually shot a 5039. I think my Kelly is better than a 1407-U9 that provides the conventional release of a 5039. I'd put it up against the 5018. Mine is a single stage, although I believe John Kelly made a two-stage version. It adjusts to under 50g, and can be set very very crisp.
However John Kelly died over twenty years ago, and I think made his triggers and sights as a sideline, so these aren't common. I searched for several years to find mine. And have seen one for sale since, and that attached to a barrel/action.

Hi Tim,
interesting you say that!
I recently found a 5071 (I think it was) which is a 5018 made for the old 1400 action from the change over days.
I think only made for about a year.
Bought it on a german gun site for about £110 and put it on after some days of understanding the multitude of adjustments.
Was OK, but could not get it to be better than the 5039! (I did in the end understand the interaction of the settings! - quite logical, once one sits down with the original instructions from Anschutz)
So I sold it again on the same site with a small profit, actually.
I have both the 1407 U9 and the 5039 triggers - also the basic 1411 U2.
I am looking for a 'glass break' at 2 to 4oz
and can only get that with the 'set' function on the 5039
BUT! - I have the feeling that the 'set' function delays the lock time by a noticeable fraction!
therefore I have for the time being set the 5039 to the 'normal' direct trigger function at perhaps 10-15oz?
BUT - I can't get a 'glass break' on that setting!
If I go that far down on the screw to get a 'glass break' , locking is uncertain which is not good in a competition!
It's OK as it is, better than most other 'target' triggers I've shot, but NOT as good as I know it could be!
Am I doing something wrong or is that just the way it is??
Is there some knowledgeable advice about - on perhaps honing/polishing the sear of the Anschutz trigger?
(I have been tuning Pistol/Revolver triggers for 40 years + more - but am hesitant to get at the Anschutz trigger
without first having some expert advice).

Gunter,
The 5071 was the prototype for the 5018, made for the 16 series ("transitional"/ x barrel) rifles. It lacks the 5018''s coarse weight adjustment cam at the side. There was a later 5071-1 that was a 5018 with a 16 series compatible catch. The retro-fit 5071/18 for the 1400 rifles is the 5072.
I think the 5071/5018 replaced the 5039 for a few reasons. I think one was cost. Another was lock time; you aren'to the only one to think a set trigger is slower than a conventional trigger. Finally, set triggers weren't allowed for standard rifle, so there was incentive to find a better trigger that met the rules for Free and Standard matches.
A Kelly can do glass rod breaking. My old 5018 could in single stage operation, although I think the Kelly is crisper.

Tim,
must have been the 5071-1, as it had the cam! (getting old and forget things if I don't write them down!)
Had to make it fit - took the safety off, shortened the pin and removed some edges.
but it was in the right place to engage the bolt.
I am drooling!! can I offer you a hardly used ex-wife or something for your Kelly? (or was it 'hard' ? HeHe)
Send me a PM if that might be a possibility.

Sadly the Kelly is not for sale. A second wife means a second mother-in-law, and I don't fancy my chances of getting another who likes me.
I do have a slightly broken 1400 Kenyon in the cupboard.
