Hi I`ve just found this site and finding it very interesting.Having done a lot of prone in the past (15yrs ago)I am trying to regain some of my past ability.Just before I had to take a break I purchased a 1413 (about the last model with new trigger and bolt) and was fighting to get consistant scores. What are prone people using for stocks now,I just dont seem to get consistant groups. Is it possible to fit one of the new Anschutz Alu stocks to it?Would there be available a sleeve to fit the 14 to20 models?I had a 1411p before but liked the idea of extra adjustment offered by the 13 models. We shoot 20yds 25yds indoor and 50mtr prone only,we do have a small squad shooting 3P.I was brought up on indoor and outdoor fullbore, have shot in Palma matches and Repped in 300mtr.Any Advice on Prone smallbore would be appreciated.
Martin.

Martin: Sounds like you are from down under someplace or perhaps England. Anyway, contact me at: bawilli@attglobal.net and maybe I can help some. Don't know much about the stock switching, etc, but other ideas I have.

If you don't shoot consistant groups, check your ammo first and match the ammo to the rifle. The stock is a minor issue - you must be sure your rifle is able to produce the accuracy from a rest. I shoot a 20 yr old Anschutz 1813 and it produced a 10.5mm 10 shot group with proper ammo. The stock is only a matter of convenience. I try to keep it as simple as possible.

Check out the Flordia Smallbore website. There is a lot of information about smallbore prone shooting.

Yes the new Anschutz aluminium stocks will take older M54 actions, as the receiver hasn't much changed in 50 years. I'm not sure what you meant by a sleeve, but 14-19 series actions fit into the alu stock with an adaptor block.

As for the inconsistency; is this because the rifle doesn't fell quite right? In which case you may need to adjust your position. get an experienced shooter to look you over while in position, they may see things that you can't when lying down with the rifle.

If your shots feel good, yes it could be the ammunition. at 20-25yards most quality ammuntion (i.e. Eley match, lapua Master) should group well enough. At 50m a little testing may pay dividends.

Remember that free rifles have a lot more adjustment than prone rifles. It is quite easy, if you are not used to them, not to set them up perfectly. This can result in inconsistent shooting. As with the position have someone look you over; it may be that the butt is a bit too high, or left, or the cheekpiece is too low.

Hope this helps.
