2004 FINAL OLYMPIC RIFLE, PISTOL and RUNNING TARGET TEAM TRIALS

FORT BENNING, Ga. – Like predicted, the competition only got tighter Saturday, as the Olympic Rifle Selection Match wrapped up its second day of events held on Fort Benning’s Pool Ranges.

Each rifle event will span over the course of three days. On the third, a composite score will be calculated to find the top-two from each event that will be headed to the Olympic Games. An athlete’s score will composed of each day’s qualifying score and only their top-two finals.

In men’s air, Staff Sgt. Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.) of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), really took control of today’s match. Parker finished fifth yesterday but came out today and hit a 597, launching him into first as he headed toward the finals. Parker then hit the highest finals’ score of the event, with a 103.5, and is currently leading the men with an aggregate score of 1,393.9. Matthew Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.), however, is still very close. With his win yesterday and a score that tied for second today, Emmons looks to clinch the No. 2 spot on the Olympic Team. But of course Ryan Tanoue (Honolulu, Hawaii) is still a threat. Tanoue finished tied with Emmons after the final today, but also finds himself tied with USAMU’s Spc. Trevor Gathman of Corbett, Ore. with a 1,390.0 overall score.

As for the women’s three-position event, the standings are even closer after today’s conclusion. Melissa Mulloy-Mecozzi (Middleton, Mass.) won today’s event, although she didn’t make the finals on the first day. Mulloy-Mecozzi will have to make the finals tomorrow in order to have a shot at the Olympic Team. Amber Darland, of Delta Junction, Alaska, took second today, maintaining a consistent two-day score and currently leading the women with a 1,356 aggregate score. Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.) finished tied for third for the second day, but is also remaining very consistent shooting a two-day aggregate score of 1,352.1, which puts her comfortably in second-place as she tries to make her first Olympic Team. Morgan Hicks, of Roy, Wash., is currently third in overall
points, after winning yesterday gave her a little bit of buffer for a not-so-great final today.
