Help from beginner please

Post by Cork »

Hello, I've just recently acquired a new air pistol. I'm fairly new to the sport, and my shooting is poor. After nearly 300 shots with the pistol, I’m only getting most of my pellets in the 7 ring, with the occasional 6s and 8s. After I press the trigger, which is currently set to 500g, I can see my front site shifting to the left a bit, and naturally, most of my shots end up on the left side. Is this a problem of not following through, improper trigger technique, or something else? Basically, I’m looking for any advice on how to improve my shooting. I’ve looked up some of the archived articles and posts on this site, and have started doing a bit of dry-firing. Thanks.

Your shots are moving left because:
a. You are not locking your wrist
b. You are using too little of your trigger finger, try and move the trigger shoe a bit back.(this is the most obvious reason)
c. Whe you release the trigger don't yank it back, slowly apply pressure until the shot breaks.
d. You must follow through.
e. Your concentration should be completely on the front sight, not on the target. The front sight should be clear while the target is a blur.

Thanks for the advice. Although I do have one more question. I've heard "locking your wrist" several times before. I can't seem to figure out what it means or how to do it. Do you mean bending your wrist backwards past 180 degrees at the elbow so that it is "locked"? Thanks.

Locking the wrist is easiest done by droppping the hand down, inline with your arm, whilst in the shooting position. But it depends on if your grip permits it. The FAS have a very dropped wrist grip. It's really more a mental thing, don't let your hand flop around like a fish, control it. Don't get too tense tho. Oh yeah, and 300 shots isn't many. Tho if you are getting them all in the black at that stage you are doing well. Keep up the hard work and the scores will look after themselves.
