Getting air rifle in NYC

I live in New York City, and was going to buy a match air rifle. Internet stores, however, say that they don't ship to NYC due to some local laws. Does anybody know what those laws are? How can one legally own and shoot air rifle in NYC?

As I remember from an AP shooting friend, who lives in NYC, you cannot purchase or have in your possession an air rifle within the five boros of New York City. Most residents however, purchase their arms out of the city and bring it home quietly. I suggest you find a firearms dealer outside of city limits and work from there carefully.
