i have a basement that is roughly 8.6 meters with room for target and shooter. i know it won't simulate the 10 m, but do you think this distance would be good enough to build the skill? or is it too close? thanks!

Can't hurt. Any practice is better than none. Download the free scatt software and you can print reduced size targets to practice with.

Yes you can and many of us do. Remember that you get a bit less penalized for angular errors though.

You can shoot as close as you have to, but bear in mind rebound shots if you put your target too close (5m is OK for me, but I'll always try to shoot the longest distance I have).

You can also dry fire and hold against a wall.

You also can simulate 10m for live shooting with an electronic target SQ10 that automatically scales for distance from 3m - 15m

I think you are shooting AR…you may want to look into comparing “black” diameters of various other targets…and just use those targets…and if scoring…make yourself a scoring template out of a clear film with the appropriate scaled diameter scoring rings. You can judge the center of the hole vs scoring ring…close enough.


I think there are NRA BB rifle 15’ targets. Also there are reduced free pistol for 25’ than can be found…that are very small bull.

If you were AP…that’s easy…just use 10m AR at about 5 yards

If you are only dry firing, you can add distance by looking at the target via a mirror.
Example using a 50 foot target, place target 30 feet from mirror, then stand 20 feet from said mirror
and aim at reflection in mirror, combined distance equals 30 feet plus 20 feet= 50 feet.

I have been shooting air rifle and pistol at 7m in my basement for the last 2 decades. I use A-36 targets.

I am not going for score, but for center. If you take the same guns to the matches, know your come ups be for you start :)
