Hi "ado",
I suggest a breathing as if you have been running, take a BIG breath let it out and then let in a medium size breath and hold it....do this just before your hold. Too big and breath and your about to bust! Too small a breath and you will be oxygen starved in about 10 seconds, this is why you should "hyper-ventilate" and take a deep breath just before holding a medium size breath....as for trigger control...some like it slow and soft... and some like it swift and crisp...what ever is comfortable to you! Comfort is the name of the game!

Not disagreeing, just trying to clarify your explanation. The urge to breath is triggered, not by a lack of oxygen in your lungs, but by an excess of carbon dioxide. If you take several deep breaths, exhaling fully after each one, you purge much of that carbon dioxide from your blood and from your lungs. This will allow you to hold for a little bit longer before your body starts urging you to take another breath.
Good luck and great scores.
