Tom, at that price I would suggest you shop for a good used gun. Competition guns are more likely to be well cared for and often are traded up. Some are "Club guns" with considerable use but if you are careful and patient you can find an individual that simply wants to sell a good gun at a fair price. $400 is not easy but possible. I recently sold a Walther LGR in fine shape but with a few marks on it for less than that. I have bought a really fine FWB300S for less than that. An number of Air Arms S200 varients are less than than that as are Daisy 753's. I would look for a mechanically sound gun and not worry about cosmetics. I would look for a SSP or recoiless springer to start as they are self contained but be patient as they do come along.

Re: Tau 200 will meet your budget

The Tau 200 CO2 rifle will meet your budget, although it isn't air. For the money, I'd choose it over the Daisy.
Are you new to air rifle and just want to try it before committing big bucks, or is it a real money issue. If its the first, you can probably spend a bit more, get a good used gun as Gaines mentioned, and if it turns out not to be your sport, you can re-sell the gun and get most (if not all) of your money back.

Agree with Gains to buy used ones.
Good air rifle for competition mostly made from EU.

Consider Avanti

Post by Joe Matusic, MD »

I bought my daughter and wife a Daisy Avanti (pretty sure its the 200T) model) at the Damascus show for $309. Definietly kid sized, nice trigger (was breaking about 2-2.5 lbs), Gamo sights. Its a PCP, so no cocking. You will need a scuba adapter ($45) and some way to charge it (scuba tank or pump in the $150-$170 range). I like the above idea better for an adult with no pump or scuba tank. The FWB 300s, Walther LGR / LGV, Diana 75 to1, Anshutz 250, etc are obtainable in that range, but just barely and no need for the scuba stuff.
