Hammerli AP40

Post by Hawkeye »

Anybody have any comments on the Hammerli AP40. Compared to the other higher end air-pistols(Eg: Steyr LP10, Fwb P34, Morini 162EI, Walther LP300) What is the Hammerli's grip like, is it as comfortable as the Morini grips?
Thanks

I have a close shooting buddy who went from the IZH46 to the AP40---(sold it within 3 months) then he purchased the Walther ----(sold it in one year)---just bought the Morini 162EI and loves it as I do mine. He found the AP40 toooooo light----and the Walther trigger tooooo iffy in adjustment. It also would not maintain the trigger pull adjustments for any length of time. Now this friend is a 570 shooter and an excellent gun smith---so you do the math.

I presently own a Walther LP300 one of the earlier models, have had it for a year now. Its been giving me major problems, the regulator first failed, the I developed trigger problems, the list is endless, but I don't know why, I still like the pistol. I am planning to get rid of it now and buy another pistol. I dont like the Morini but was considereing the P34 or the Hammerli AP40. What about the P34 is it a good pistol?

Hi Kawkeye.
Personally, I'm not too keen on the gun for a few reasons. First, it's too light for me, but there are barrel weights available. Then again, you may want the reduced weight. To each his own.
Second, I am not a fan of the rubberised grip. Due to the material, you can't really modify it. Now, you can get Rink grips and adjust those. A friend of mine did just that (and got the barrel weights.) She's happy with the gun now.
I chose the Morini, but the 162EI has limitations on the grip because of the electronics. I didn't fully investigate that issue, and I would rethink getting that AP again. If I were to get a new gun, I would probably join the crowd and pick up a Steyr LP-10.

I have the Anschutz Lp@, great gun with lots of options, everything is adjustable in this pistol, weights, grips in every angle, sights in every position and the trigger is the same as in the Steyr, as most of the parts of the gun. You should consider it.

New AP40's are suppose to have steel barrels ... redistributing it's weight and balance ... and making them more "proper" for adult males. The rubber/plastic grip can be worked like wood, and Hammerli Grip Paste can be used on it. I found the grip too round-ish to give me a consistent grip.
The P34 use to have a VERY crisp trigger that required a VERY tight grip ... but I believe the newer ones have a more moderate trigger release. They also now come with a Morini grip.
It's hard to get past the fact that most elite shooters are using LP10's or Morini 162EI's ... why fight it ... :-)
Some find the LP10 "soul-less." (Maybe because it's recoil system is nia perfect!) The Morini 162EI doesn't have an ajustable grip ... the almost equally nice mechanical trigger 162MI does have some grip adjustment. I'm hoping that the newly designed trigger group for my original series LP300 makes it match reliable ... it already has the "best" and most adjustable grip. A lot of shooters comment on how great the grip fits them ... but of course everyone is different ...
