In response to the Progress chart I mentioned

Post by Matt »

This is the Advanced progress chart for the Men's Air Pistol. I don't have the beginner chart anymore because I have already completed it.
There are a total of nine boxes on the paper. The first box containes 6 spaces for a signature. The title inside the box is "5-shot group: 8-ring or smaller." Next is a box with six spaces and a title of "10-shot group: 8-ring or smaller" This keeps going on with each box containing six spaces for a signature but different titles. The titles are as follows: "15-shot group: 8-ring or smaller", "20-shot group: 8-ring or smaller", "30-shot group: 8-ring or smaller", "5-shot group: 9-ring or smaller", "10-shot group: 9-ring or smaller", "15-shot group: 9-ring or smaller." The very last box containes twelve spaces and is titled "5-shot group: 10-ring." Once the progress chart is completed my coach guarantees we will be shooting in the 550's so long as we follow the process that enabled us to complete the chart.
Keep in mind that if working on the 30-shot group: 8-ring or smaller box you must complete that box before moving on to more difficult groups. Therefore, if you happen to shoot 10 shots in the nine ring right off the start you still can't sign off the 10-shot group: 9-ring or smaller box. This progress chart helps build consistency and re-inforces what the shooter needs to do to complete his "perfect process" to shoot good shots. When doing this correctly you should find that your main group is insided the 9-ring but the flier's are what you are trying to get rid of. Gradually the fliers will be pulled in or disappear because you are gaining consistency.
You can also make charts for other disciplines. Just sit down and think about the type of groups good shooters shoot.

I understood the "idea", and now I know what and how you had been doing it. In training my Team, I use different drills for different purposes for each of them at times. And usually after those drills, they get to see or feel that they've done better (sometimes they even understand it). The training effect should not be seen in just one target, and it's a simple thing such as a chart as you describe that helps keep these things in their minds.
In their third year of shooting 3P AR,the Kids are shooting pretty good, and I've got other Coaches asking me how I do it. Some of the things I do are from ideas I've gotten from these forums, and that can help everyone be a better Coach. Thanks....
