Dry Firing Works!

Post by Dipnet »

I know, I know, the biggest non-secret out there. I this time of COVID, I've not been participating in matches or going to range that much, so I've been dry firing every night for about 15 minutes before going to bed. It's relaxing, reduces my anger, and keeps my skills from dealing due to lack of practice (and age). Went to the range early this morning and my beginning routine is to shoot 4 long line targets (two 22, two 45) and to my surprise I shot 92-5X, 94-2X, 91-2X, and 95-5X. Those are great long line scores for me. For once, it seemed relatively easy (normally, I really do not like the long line, especially the first two strings at the start of a match). I've tried changing my attitude towards it and that worked for awhile but hasn't lasted. I hate starting a match cold.

If I had only followed suggestions by many shooters to dry fire instead of going to the range and carefully repeating the same mistakes infinitum.

Dry firing with a red dot clearly shows trigger jerks and the repeating it every night has made my routine very consistent as well as reduced the time for each shot. I've also been lifting 10-lb weights (75 slow reps every other night). This is helping as well. I've never been one for following directions...dipnet

Great therapy! Try using lighter weights though, anywhere from 2lb (weight of the gun) to twice that. Your primary goal should be fine motor control while managing the weight. Look up the "thrower's ten" exercises. They really help.

useful app (http://www.sporttargetshooting.com) for dry fire training, especially for all kind of rapid sessions.
