How do you dispose your pellets?

Post by seamaster »

I usually put my squashed lead pellets in a bucket, pellets with duct seal gunk/ trace paper bits. Full bucket is about 10-15 pounds. I usually drive by nearest indoor shooting range, put it on their door entrance before they open for business, sincerely hope they will dispose it properly.

Today I just dumped it in my trash bin, waiting for garbage truck pick up.

Now I feel very environmental unease with this act.

How do you guys dispose your pellet bucket trash?

4-H Shooting Sports muzzleloading club gets everything from our 4HSS airgun program.... worth looking into. Heck, you might even get it classed as a charitable donation ( though it's pretty tough to beat the standard deduction these last two years!) Dare I say, GO DONALD!!!???

Melt it down and make projectiles of your choice. Rinse and repeat.

There are still plenty of folks that cast their own bullets, and are happy to use it for reloading. I take mine to my gun club, and there's a guy who loves the stuff. Mine doesn't have ductseal in it, and that might make a bit of a stink when it burns off, but it should be OK.

Scrap metal merchants or some plumbers will take it, failing that an electronics manufacturing or roofing company might take it.

Also tyre fitters, they dispose of wheelweights.

Putting toxic waste in trash may be illegal depending on where you live.

Just throw them in the trash and have a beer.

Why can't you put it in your recycling bin? Or do you know any fishermen who cast their own sinkers?

I give mine to whichever commercial bullet maker that shoots with us shows up first. Both have offered to pay me but I am just happy to recycle the stuff. I should mention they give me a good-guy price on their bullets, which shoot great.

The first couple of times I tried to carefully get rid of target debris, but one caster said just leave it in. Works for me.

Melted some down into small (50g) weights for modelmakers. However a bit tedious and certainly not a sufficient demand!

Found a metal recycler nearby who pays GBP1 per kilo. Better than disposing of it needlessly/carelessly.

Dealers in the Phoenix area were paying about $0.20 a pound for lead. It wasn't even worth the gas to salvage the stuff. Brass was a different matter.

If trashing it bothers you, just leave it at your range. Someone will steal it.
