2003 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
FT. BENNING, Ga. – The last weekend of competition at the 2003 USA Shooting National Championships did not hold too many surprises.
In Saturday’s Three-Position Rifle contest, Jason Parker (Fortson, Ga.) came out the winner. Parker had a seven-point lead after Friday’s first-day results, and went on to widen his lead to 10 by the finals. Parker walked away with his second 2003 National Championship gold medal, finishing with a score of 2,434.7. Recently, a new world record holder, Parker also clinched first place in the men’s air rifle event earlier in the week.
Mike Anti (Ft. Benning, Ga.) made a big jump after a superb second-day shoot. Anti, shot an 1,169 to finish in front of both Eric Uptagrafft (Longmont, Colo.) and University of Alaska-Fairbanks shooter, Joe Hein. Anti was able to squeak by in the finals to finish with a silver. Uptagrafft finished with 2,423.6, where as Anti held on with 2,423.9.
Also in the 3-position event, The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Team of Parker, Anti and Trevor D. Gathman was awarded the team gold, boosting the USAMU team medal count to three. Soldiers of the USAMU received a total of 16 individual medals, as well.
On Sunday, five-time Olympian John McNally (Heath, Texas) dominated the Rapid Fire Pistol event. He shot the only 100-point round and finished 30 points ahead of silver medalist, Carl Trompeter. McNally’s two-day total score was 1,265.2, while Eric Weeldreyer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) rounded out the top three with a score of 1221.6. This would be Weeldreyer and Trompeter’s third medal of the week.
