Countdown to Changwon: USA Shooting to Compete at World Championship

Every four years doesn’t just mark the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but for international-style shooting enthusiasts, it also marks the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship for Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun, which runs August 31 – September 15 in Changwon, South Korea.

The 52nd ISSF World Championship is the largest gathering of international-style shooting competitors vying for World Championship glory, as well as the 60 Olympic quotas up for grabs during the two-week-long Championship.

An Olympic quota is essentially a country’s ticket to compete in a specific event in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The World Championship is the first opportunity for shooting athletes to earn Olympic quotas, but it’s will also the only chance for countries to earn quotas in the three new Olympic events: Air Pistol Mixed Team, Air Rifle Mixed Team and Trap Mixed Team. An athlete can only earn one quota for his/her country and a country may earn up to two quotas per event.

Nearly 100 athletes, coaches and staff will make their way to Changwon to represent the United States in this World Championship where 1,804 athletes from 90 countries will be gathering to compete in not only the 15 Olympic events, but the Junior competitions in each of those events, as well as the non-Olympic events. This year’s team of 82 athletes is the largest team ever fielded by USA Shooting at a World Championship and is comprised of athletes from 31 states and includes 12 Olympians among its ranks.

At the last all-discipline World Championship in 2014 in Granada, Spain, the U.S. netted 17 medals and two Olympic quotas. Among those, four World Champions and one Team Champion were crowned. (Shotgun has also held World Championship competitions every two years).

If World Cup, Junior World Cup or last year’s Shotgun World Championship success are any indication of what to expect at this World Championship, the USA Shooting Team looks strongest in its Shotgun and Junior ranks.

All the U.S. World Cup medals in 2018 came from the Shotgun program for a total of 15 (Eight gold, three silver and four bronze). At the 2017 Shotgun World Championship in Moscow, Russia, U.S. athletes finished second in the medal standings with 13, which included a podium sweep in the Junior Women’s Skeet event. At the Junior World Cup this year in Suhl, Germany, U.S. Rifle and Pistol athletes won five medals (two gold and three silver).
