type of ammunition to run through Mitchell high standard

I have a Mitchell high standard its real picky about what ammunition I run threw it. It shoots tighter groups with lower velocity ammunition and somebody recommended trying to shoot 22 shorts threw and I kinda questioned if it would work because it is a 22 lr. Would anybody else think that might be something worth trying??

The shorts would probably shoot OK, but you would probably need to manually cycle the slide.

OK I shoot competitively and have to load one shot at a time so that wouldn't be a problem but do you think it will shoot tighter groups than the HV cause I can't find SV in my area

What are you shooting with the High Standard that you have to load one at a time? Out of my HS Victor (1972 model) I shoot CCI Std. and Eley Target.

I'm shooting high velocity that I buy from my club and I need some lower velocity my gun just seems to shoot tighter groups with it but the competition I am currently shooting in only allows me to load one shot at a time

Silhouette? What competition are you shooting. I shoot std velocity for Bullseye and silhouette.

Its just 4-H the only reason that I shoot in it is to get more practice for junior Olympics

Magazine work might be necessary but still might not work perfectly.

Mitchells do not have a top reputation.


All that said. No matter what your relative gun/ammo accuracy is on paper, watch your front sight and learn and judge your progress from it.

Twist rate for LR is 1:16. Twist for .22 short is 1:20.
You might find an accuracy problem firing shorts.

You will definitely have accuracy problems using Shorts. At your probable skill level it may not matter.

The problem is that Shorts are more spendy than most cheap SV LRs right now.
