I am fairly new to 10M competition, and I have competitors using iris devices. These are either part of the sight assembly of the gun, or in some cases are attached to the lens of shooting glasses. Which is preferable and why?

Rifle or pistol?
Rifle you will have a front aperture and a rear iris ... any correction must be in the shooting glasses, regular glasses or contacts. (I know this is the rifle area, but want to make sure that's what you are shooting)
Both will be on the rifle ... the front aperture is primarily for the sighting, point of aim process, while the rear iris aids in depth of field and light adjustment. Some may also wear an iris on their glasses, but on a rifle there will always be a rear sight and a front sight.
