Hi All,

Been reading for a while, and finally got a set up to start putting my reading into practice :)

I've been saving for a good pistol for a while, and I picked up a FAS 604 for £275 at the weekend. I tried a few pistols at the local club and the local shop but the FAS seemed to suit my hand and budget best, I am very pleased. I'm not new to shooting (12 years rifle experience) but I am pretty new to pistols (only had a crosman 2300 before this, which sucked) I'm just sort of semi interested at the moment, didn't really want to drop big money on one just yet.

Right now I have been shooting at 7 yards, length of my garage but I want to stretch things out a little...

I'm going to remove the garage window and install a pulley system which extends into the garden behind the garage to get the full 10m distance.

nothing too hard, just a post stuck in the ground and a few pulleys and some string, nothing high tech, nothing I can't remove in the future.

However... I live in the UK where it goes dark at 4pm right now and shooting outside is a little harder in the dark.

If I want to shoot after work at home (which I do) I need a good lighting system which will work.

I'm literally ok with installing anything - So the question is what do you guys recommend?

I imagine there are other people with the same sort of set up as me... semi indoor outdoor (shooting out a window or back room.

What do you guys use?

You could shoot from outside in.

Can I suggest updating your profile with your location; it can save confusion later.

With regard to the lighting, I would just start with a small floodlight fixed to the outside of the garage. They're dirt cheap from Wickes. The 120w one at £4.99 MIGHT just do it but I would be tempted to use the 400w one at £6.99

Ensure that you've got plenty of light over your sights (just behind your head is good) and a bit of lighting down the rest of the garage.

It might not come up to ISSF standards but it'll get you going.

Hi Elpresador, and welcome to the forum. You've made a good choice of pistol. I've got a couple of them at the moment, one of which I'm going to put scope mounts on and sell to a friend who's wanting it for shooting from a rested position. Fairly easy guns to work on, so if you need help then just ask.

As far as your home range goes you just need a minimum of appropriate lighting above/behind you to get a good sight picture and then lighting on your target. The one on the target could be a single angle-poise unit mounted above the target and pointing back at it. The low voltage lamps that are mounted on top of wardrobes, pointing into them will work. Try the bay or your local Swedish megastore.

I would just add this. Have you consider shooting indoor at your current 7 yards, with reduced targets? Somewhere in the 65/70% of the original.
That would give you a similar sight picture and the ability to shoot indoors.

This would be my prefered option for weeknights, and I would hang a target outside during the day at weekends.

Ok I have been busy :)

I have a 2x2 post in the garden - solid as a rock and no concrete used so in summer I can remove it again when the garden is in use.

2 clothesline pulleys - one on the post, one on the back wall of the garage with 4mm nylon string going back and forth.

I have a cross piece off the post with 2 more strings to act as guides.

I'm sure you can imagine the rest... Very crude but it works.

As for lighting I went to my local hardware store and found one of these

Downside is its indoor only - but some grease and duck tape has mostly sealed it up, I have wired it onto a longer lead and it goes through the window into a plug socket.

All seems to be working well :D

I also thought of this - but it would mean printing targets, which tend to rip and its just a pain. I'd rather just spend 2 hours running a post out into the garden and shoot at full distance :)

Hi I shoot from inside my kitchen to my shed door which is worked out great as its 10metres in length. This works well for me as its well protected from the wind. I must admit I don't shoot my competition pistol outside as I like to protect my pride and joy from the elements as much as I can. I to use a FAS 604 and its really lovely and smooth to shoot.

I know it's a pain... but if you ever decide on doing so (raining day...), gluing the printed reduced target to the back of a regular target works well... It's just one more hassle! ;)

As to shooting outdoors, I would add a piece of string or a small strip of light cloth to the underneath of the target. Something that tells you if there is a gust of wind, but remains hidden by your sights and gun when you are in the aiming area.

There's a 6 yard target that's called an Air 8 that can be quite challenging if you are restricted to shorter distances. If you can do it I would stick with 10m ISSF targets at that distance and go for consistency in all aspects of shooting at that range.

Just enjoy it and don't get hung up on trivia.
