sling pulse

I have been adjusting my sling for some time now and i have a 20x scope on with a dot that fits the x ring at 50m.At first my pulse was bouncing the dot a lot, i now have it down to the size of the 10 ring. I have not been able to get it any smaller no matter what adjustment i make. How calm are your fellas sight pulse bounce? Am i at the best to be exspected?

Jeff,

on a good day when I shoot 'scope my pulse flicks the cross hair about halfway between centre and the top of the bull.

I read in your post that you would like suggestions on how to decreease your pulse. This is a difficult question to answer over the net.

What is your physical condition? It's one of the good things about shooting that you don't have to be super-fit, but a reasonable standard helps. Carrying excess weight, or high blood pressure probably won't help.

Apologies if you've already gone over this, but what sling do you use, and how tight around your arm is it? Have you tried loosening the cuff? A very tight cuff will compress the brachial artery and transfer a pulse through the sling to the rifle. You want room in the cuff for at least three fingers. Also, where does the sling pull against? It should be the back/outside of the arm, not the inside to avoid the artery.

The height of your sling on the arm, jacket fit, underlayers, and sling tension all affect pulse. I have heard of the choice of glove playing a part too.

Hi Tim thank you for your reply. I am a sort of new to this prone shooting[5 years] I have done a lot of equipment changes over this period with some good to no change in results in score. I have a 565 av. and am trying to get to a 580 av. I have the Gehmann 845b hand stop with the Gehmann 431 micro adj. sling and a Kurt Thune hard plastic glove. I just got a new Gehmann leather jacket and realized right away that the sling strap was putting way to much pressure on the inside strap. So i attached a button on my jacket up and back from the factory strap.....so much better. I have then placed the inside of the sling to be "relaxed" with feeling the pressure on the outside and back of the tricep muscle. Not sure how or where you are measuring the three fingers? I am finding that i am getting 3 x's and a 12o'clock 9 and a 6 o'clock 9 on most of my 5-shot 50m 6-bull targets. So i'm dumping 6 points avg. I was hoping to lesson the pulse to change at least half of those 9's to 10's. Again i am just a beginner and am sure some of those 9's are from other mistakes but sure do notice the bounce . The scores are my iron sight scores and when on the scope it avg. in the 197-198's.As you can see by the scores i am missing the iron sight bounce and this brings me to my post...can it be lesser on the scope as a indicator of what my iron's are doing? Just does't look like it is bouncing that much but the scope shows it is .

Jeff,

your pulse should be the same whether shooting iron sights or 'scope, although it will be more visible with the 'scope. That you lose points with odd (off-call I presume) high and low shots with irons, but not with a 'scope makes me think your problem is related to your iron sight technique/set up rather than pulse.

Perhaps there is something different in your head positioning between 'scope and irons?

The three-finger space should be at the front, by your bicep. Lots of new shooters (and some older) want to tighten the sling cuff until it acts as a tourniquet.

Thanks Tim. I do have the sling open . I agree there is so much more to learn, but it is fun and never boring.
