From Northern Florida, Fairly new to rifle shooting.

I am trying to get into Olympic style rifle competition - hopefully if there's one shooting from the ground (facedown on the mat, with bipod'n stuff).

I shoot pretty accurately with my pistols.

Can anyone give me an eye opener for Olympic Style Shooting, where to buy equipment, where to join competition where to get training, etc.?

I am over 40, retired, have been treating target shooting a hobby. Own a Cheytac 308 win.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

your enthusiasm is encouraging.

There are three Olympic rifle disciplines: 10M Air rifle, 50m Smallbore Prone, and 50m smallbore 3 Position.

The closest to what you describe is the 50m Prone match. This is shot lying down, but bipods are specifically not allowed. The rifle is supported by the shooter's body and a sling (a belt that joins the upper left arm to the rifle).

Further to Tims reply, your best starting point is to join a club that shoots the styles you are interested in. Maybe visit a local match first to observe and speak to some of the competitors as well.

Thanks Tim And Rob.

I have been searching for clubs but they're not. Olympic style shooting. In US south where I live there are a lot of gun owners knowing shootings really well including precision rifle shooting (sniper type, up to 1000 yard plus), and we use military type of ammo, 308 win, 308 win mag, 408, etc.

Is there anyone here from US southeast or anywhere in US who can give me some idea? I emailed. USOC but bureaucracy ignored me.

thanks again.

Have you thought about NRA smallbore? There are some differences in the course of fire and targets*, but the techniques are exactly the same. You are much more likely to find an NRA Smallbore match than an Olympic style 50m match. Many of the US Olympic team shoot domestic NRA matches very successfully.

*Olympic Prone is a 60 shot match at 50m only. US NRA Matches are shot at 50 yards, 50m, and 100 yards; the common format is 160 shots over a day. US NRA targets have bigger scoring rings than Olympic targets.

Try looking for PTO matches in your area on the USA Shooting website. We host them in Charleston, S. C. plus we also have outdoor NRA prone events. We have a prone regional in November.

Go to Shooting Sports USA http://www.nrapublications.org/ssusa/ and check the current issue for the tournaments listed in your area.

Here is the current list:

Scroll down to Smallbore Rifle for that discipline and or search the page for 'Florida'.
