Sporter rifle for a 9 year old

A friend recently asked me to give him some advice on purchasing a sporter air rifle for his 9 year old. He wants the rifle to come with a decent set of sights and to be a good rifle to learn the basics on. The boy is average size for a 9 year old and is fairly new to rifle shooting. The price range would be $200-$300. Any ideas or input will be greatly appreciated.

I know it is a bit outside of the price range, but it is, in my opinion, the best option for what you have described. And it should work for the kid for many years....

It is accurate and fairly adjustable with a reasonably good trigger. There seem to be a lot of them in use for the junior/sporter folks and the seem to be winning a lot in those areas.

Here in the UK Sporter Air Rifle it seems is really only shot by the Scouts. There are quite a few shooting in the GB Junior squad these days though. By far the most common rifle is the Air Arms S200T. This is the same rifle as the CZ T200. Of around twenty or so shooters I have seen one shooter using a BSA Scorpion. There are five or six using the Air Arms S400 MPR T and all the rest seem to be using the AA S200T. I think that the S400 MPR T is probably the better rifle, but it is "Full sized". For a younger shooter the 200 is perfect as it is that bit smaller all round, having been developed from a pistol design.

I have the Air Arms S200 in the Sporter setup. It's a brilliant rifle for LWS competition it's nice and light even with scope and moderator so getting the target version I will be even lighter.

I saw one in the UK for about £345 for the target version a few weeks back not sure what the US pricing would be.

My 10 year old daughter can handle it just fine

The only way I know to get competition air rifles in that price range is through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP).

However, I don't think those rifles are recommended for ages under 16.

Also, they don't sell to just anyone, but it may be that your 9 year old is already part of a member organization.
