Centra Score foresight on Walther LGR

Since I didn't find this when searching the Internets, I decided to post this to help someone else if they were researching the subject.

I have a Walther LGR Match with a 17mm foresight and square body rear sight, both on Walther 10mm risers. I wanted to use clear apertures and since I couldn't find any for the original foresight, I needed to purchase an 18mm or 22mm unit. Since the Walther 18mm globe sight was not in stock in U.S. stores at the time, I decided on an 18mm Centra Score foresight with a Walther base. After installation I found my rear sight at its upper limit to hit the center of the target. Removing the front riser was not a solution due to not enough lower adjustment in the sight.

I decided to disassemble the Centra sight from its base and find out what I had to work with. It turns out the screw that held the sight to the base was relatively short, the vertical strut was threaded all the way through the strut, and there were two approximately 1.5mm rails on the bottom of the strut. I disassembled the sight completely, cut off the rails with a Dremel whiz-wheel and dressed the bottom of the strut with a file to make it flat, square and smooth. I wiped the mating surfaces with CLP and reassembled the sight with a drop of blue Loctite on the strut screw.

After sighting in the rifle I had about 2-3mm of space before hitting the upper limits of the rear sight adjustment now. There is still material left on the strut that can be removed if needed.

The black Centra unit works well and looks good, but I think I would prefer to have installed the Walther 18mm globe sight due to it looking like the original equipment and having a lower base to center dimension.
