Preventing oxidation in the buttons of the jacket ?

Is there a way to prevent oxidation in the buttons of the jacket ?

I use to put a washer between the screw and the canvas, like in the picture below:

Lacquer them.

When I was a Marine we used to call the coating on brass "Quartermaster". We had to scrub it off and then polish the stuff with "Brasso." What a useless PIA!

BTW When I was in Portugal last fall, I did manage to slam down a few belts of Porto. Mmmm.
