SP-20?

I recently saw a Walther/Hammerli SP-20 RRS .22 caliber pistol on Larry's Guns website.

I could not find any discussion about it on this forum.

Does anyone have any comments, good or bad, about this pistol?

And why is it called a "Walther/Hammerli"?

I was always under the impression that these were 2 separate firms in competition with one another.

Did one company buy out the other? Or was this some sort of a joint venture?

I have heard lots of praise about the Hammerli 208 pistols that were discontinued sometime back in the mid-1990s.

Is the SP-20 a decent replacement for the 208? Thank you.

Yes Walther bought Hammerli. I would say there is no compression between the two, they are totally different.

Hope this helps Nathan

I've seen a few with cracks in the carbon fibre frame.

I have handled one but not shot one.

Honestly, the build quality seemed a bit on the cheap side. It just felt flimsy. I have no idea if it was or how it shoots. It just felt like a toy in my hand.

Just my opinion.

Handled them only but did not like it at all.
The frame and grip are all one piece.
Currently shooting a 208 and would say that the SP20 is nowhere near the gun a 208 is.

Hammerli is now part of the Walther group of companies.
The SP20 has been out for a number of years, it replaced the 280.
It uses the same trigger assy as the 280 and is available as a .22 or .32 , or as a kit gun with both barrels.
The early one's did have some slide cracking but that has been long fixed.
As a target .22 it is better fitted, balanced ,with a lower barrel line, recoil reduction system and more adjustments than a 208.
To change grip sizes you change the lower moulded frame.
Two years of shooting, has replaced the foresights of both for taller ones only, and I am very pleased with the way they shoot.
If you want a .22/.32 that feel similar I can recommend the SP20.

A few page review and also if it is in German you can check the ammunition review for some different makers and guns in Rimfire.
