One of the students I coach has an IZH air pistol that has developed a quirk. I suspect it maybe just be a trigger adjustment issue, but I'm not very familiar with the Izzies.

He cocks it normally, loads it, but then when he is in the process of folding the breech block down, he hears a PFFT noise, and the gas escapes from someplace. He can re-cock it, and it's fine. This was happening about 1 shot in 10, but now it's almost every other shot. I didn't have time tonight to check it out personally, so I don't know if the gas is coming up & out through the normal path, but I suspect so. It sounds like the sear engagement might be marginal.

Any suggestions or idea of what might be going on?

Have you been dribbling a bit of some light oil into the air output port and working the trigger dry-firing a few times, on a regular basis? The valve may be sticking. I've noticed a distinct tendency with my 46m that the valve gets sticky after a while, every few hundred shots or so. It's very obvious in dry fire, as the valve drops in a sort of sluggish two stage sound. Under pressure it's still quick at this stage... but I'd imagine if left un-oiled a while longer it might well start failing. The 46m's valve seals aren't famous for being of excellent quality anyway, so best keep them oiled. I was using Crosman Pellgun oil for a bunch of months, but have started using a light machine oil lately as it seems to keep the thing working more reliably.

Of course it could also be a trigger adjustment. It may be the after-travel adjustment or the sear engagement (second stage) screw, not sure which, but one of these definitely leads to some sort of failure like what you're talking about.

I have had this happen with my 46M, but not as often, 4 in 1000 shots. If Gerard’s suggestion helps your student please post your results.

I haven't had time to research it further. The student has discovered that closing the loading gate gently reduces the frequency of the problem. He's muddling along OK for now.

I suspect a trigger adjustment that has worn or drifted, but I will definitely let folks know what we find out. All told, we have about 30 Izzies, and I plan on writing up all the problems & solutions we find for future use.
