Couple of months ago I widened the rear sight aperture on all my pistols thinking it was going to feel more comfortable and maybe improve my scores. Well, it didn't work. It does feel more comfortable taking the shot, but my groups seem a lot wider now. It seems I have increased the margin of error widthwise. What is the recommended rear sight aperture? Do most shooters use a rear tight aperture? How much light should I see?

As a starting point, measure the width of the foresight and set the rear sight at the same width. If you require more white around the foresight post, then increase it slightly.
Whislt more white makes it easy to recognise the foresight position if you are shooting rapid fire, for precision shooting, as you have found too much white can allow the group size to spread.

Rear sight width will depend on your type of shooting ie Precission or Rapid and also the light level on the day ie Bright/ Dull, light ahead/behind and the amount of glare.
For Precission a ratio of 2-1 works well and rapid about 3-1. The ratio is the apparent width of the rear sight to the front sight (sight picture) in your shooting position/stance.
