Mailing air cylinder internationally (from the US)

Hello everyone,
To avoid potential hassle with my travel to the UK (with my air pistol), I'm thinking of mailing my air cylinder separately. People from the US: which service should I go with? Fedex or USPS?
Also, what do I declare on the form? I'm not sure if 'air cylinder' is an acceptable item for either services.
