TOZ35 vs. MU55

I had both, they are very different pistols, both in mechanical as aesthetical design; and also their behaviour when shooting is distinct.

OK, I have bought a MU55-1 but it is still in Germany.

Have had a TOZ35. I understand that MU55 is lighter, have a grip that makes it easier to reach the trigger, also another angle of the grip.
Why and when did they stop making MU55? There is not many around, yet, as far as I know, it shoots well.. Anyone with experience of both

It has the reputation of being difficult to shoot, not forgiving at all = just the opposite of the TOZ and also fragile. This may explain the limited success.

The problem is with English transliteration of the Russian character that looks like a U. The character is pronounced Ts, as in Tsar, and there is no English single letter equivalent for that sound. Some people take the character's U appearance literally and call the gun the MU55. Others try the closest English equivalent and call it the MC55. But the most correct choice would be to do as Igor says and call it the MTs55.

One word of caution on MC and MЦ transliteration. While the correct phoneme combination is close to Ts, the transliteration (parallel alphabet letter, independent of pronunciation) that ATF uses for this gun is ц=c, following standard transliteration practices of the 1960s. Applying for an import permit as an MTs-55 may cause a bounce due to inability to identify the model.

Have you actually tried to import a MTs-55(-1)? The last time I tried several years ago, importation was prohibited because it is not on the State Dept. approved list of Soviet/Russian made guns. Didn't matter if one called it MTs, MC or MU, it was still prohibited. Is this no longer the case?

The prior comments are completely correct. The gun is not on the permitted list. So whether the application states MC-55, Mu-55 or MTs-55 will not matter.

Here is the link for California statues, and the guns are permitted. They are listed under Vostok. Is there a different list? That refers to importation?

Yes, there is another lists that applies to the US in general, not imports from the USA into CA. It is from ATF, derived from the State Department approval list. This list from ATF and US Dept State is for NEW imports, and does not apply to (limit or restrict) guns already in the USA.
