They don't mention the situation with the Pistol Team. Up until last year, MIT had a very successful Varsity Pistol Team, which had won numerous national championships & awards. The pistol instructor and Range Master position also used to include paid duties as the pistol coach.

In a cost cutting measure, a number of varsity sports were eliminated in May of 2009, pistol being one of them. The alumni & other donors managed to raise enough money for the pistol team to continue as a "Club Sport", but we did not raise enough money to pay anything for the coaching position. Will Hart coached the team on his own time last year, and took a number of shooters to the National Collegiate Championship:

Because the team is no longer a varsity sport, we can solicit donations from corporate sponsors, and do pretty much any sort of fund-raising activities we wish. The long term goal of the alumni & the Faculty Pistol & Rifle Club is to establish an endowment that would not only fund the on-going expenses of the team, but a reasonable stipend for the coach. This will take time, however, and if the person who gets the instructor & Range Master position wants to also coach the pistol team, we can't guarantee any sort of compensation. The Faculty Pistol & Rifle Club can provide some assistance with the coaching effort to help lighten the load.

I can provide further information via PM for those interested.

Please keep in mind that the requirements of this position aren't mandatory - that is their wish list. You do not need to have, for example, a degree in Physical Education but college experience is desired.

Working within the MIT environment has been a highlight of my life as the students are exceptional, to say the least, and always highly motivated. They are very, very interested in the shooting program, making the basic pistol course by far the most popular in the department. They possess lots of enthusiasm and are always willing to help and problem solve.

If you are up for the excitement and challenge, go for it!
