What is the purpose of using a shooting sweater? Is it to help fill up all the space between the jacket and if so, why would a very tight fitting sweatshirt not do the trick? What is difference between a $100 Anschutz sweater and any old skiing sweater that is of similar weight, style and fit?

Had also seen on another post that under armour works good as a base layer. As far as I know, they all have slick surfaces and I believe the goal is to have everything from your coat to all your base layers fit tight and not move so wouldn't under armour defeat this even tho it is tight fitting (wouldn't a very tight long sleeved T-shirt be better suited?)

Also, I don't mind spending $100 on a Anschutz sweater if it does the job best but I believe it was a Freeland sweater I saw the other day with the holes cut for the crease of your arm where it would bulk up. This was about half the price and seemed like a good idea. Anyone tried one the Freeland Sweaters or know of any other brands or places to get shooting sweaters?

I bought the Anschutz shooter sweater from champions choice to help my prone. I have a bad shoulder which causes my hand to be very shaky and twitchy. The thickness of the sweater dampens it and helps a lot. It also gives nice padding in the elbows for shooting prone.

Also what is good about them is the material used. Even though it is a sweater you don't actually get very sweaty wearing it. It is very breathable. It is also sewn in a way so that the seams are not going to be in a position to cause problems and allows for good positioning.

It is still a very good idea to wear Under Armor as well. Both will help you.

anyone else out there have any more advice on this or are using other brands of sweaters or something else for padding under the coat or something different than under armour for the base layer?

most NRA High Power shooters wear some kind of sweater since we shoot outdoors, usually in the heat, the sweater soaks the sweat up instead of getting the jacket dirty. I use an underarmour shirt in the summer under the sweater.
Last winter somebody broke into my garage and took my jacket, AND SHRUNK IT!! yep right in the stomach area! now I don't really have room for a sweater during standing. Scores have actually gone up.
Lots of guys use nothing but a t-shirt because of "shrunken" jackets, the position is what is really important, the sweatshirt doesn't really do much.

I wonder if I can wear some thick sweatpants under my shooting pants? my pants seem to have stretched instead of shrunken. I had to cut a hole in the waist of the pants to hook into as the rings sewn onto the pants dont make it tight enough anymore.
