Stupid question about mounting the Front Sight on my 1813

Ok,
Some guys at my range told me that I had my front sight mounted on my 1813 L in the wrong manner. They said that I had the knurled retaining ring on the wrong end of the rifle. I had it to the front. I did this because I figured that the little "key" (which is drawn to the side by the sight screw) on the inside of the sight dovetail should mate with the female notch on the sight block (maybe it's not supposed to?) The notch on the block is on the right (looking from firing position) side as it was on two of my CMP H&R Model 12 rifles. That would put the screw head on the left. When I looked at the Anschutz site, I thought I saw the screw heads on that side too, but with the ring towards the rear. Is something installed wrong? Which way should the site mount as designed by Anschutz Should I just install it with the ring to the back and not engage the key with the "notch" on the sight block?

Thanks for help with such a stupid little detail,

Danny

Ah ok follow you know. The knurled retaining ring should be facing you but I'm not sure it's gonna make a lot of difference. It may mean you get more glare interferring with the sight element in that configuration but that'd only happen if the element wasn't set in the middle (I can't recall where it is on my 1813) and in specific shooting conditions.

Rob,
Thanks for the information. After reading your response, I went and did some searching on the net and I think I figured out what I was confused about. Previously, I had various Redfield Front sights which had a screw with a concave innerface, inside, where it meets the male dovetail on the barrel. This mates with the little convex "nub" that's manufactured into the right side of the scope block. Clearly, the Redfield front sights are meant to engage this. I looked at my Anschutz front sight carefully for the first time late last night. The little "key" that's in the dovetail of the sight is clearly not machined in the manner that the Redfield sights are, and it's also on the opposite side from the Redfield sights, if you place the knurled ring to the back as I was instructed to. Now, it's clear that this part on the Anschutz front sight is merely a clamp and not ment to engage that machined feature on the front sight block.

Thanks,

Danny
