How do I adjust ports (gas relief drillings) on Hammerli 232

My Hammerli 232 has 6 barrel ports (gas relief drillings). A picture in the manual shows screws that go in the two rear ports. There is no mention of the purpose of the ports or protocol for adjusting these screws in the manual, nor mention of how many screws can be used or even if any are necessary. (my used 232 did not have any when I got it)
I would appreciate some info on exhaust port screw purpose and adjustment or a reference where I can look up the answer.
