Bassham's stock design

I finished re-reading "With Winning in Mind" again this weekend and was thinking about the stock Lanny designed for the 1976 Olympics -- why didn't more shooters use it before aluminum stocks came along?

Was it because it was from Walther and Anschutz was the dominant model? Or did folks not like the sloped forend? I've only ever shot the Anschutz design so I don't have any thing to compare it against.
I could be wrong, but I don't remember coming across many pictures of them.
