Izzy piston wear

Hi all,
Just picked up a (lightly) used IZH-46M. It appears from the trigger setup the previous owner didn't know much about it. It also appears that the piston seal has been changed once. Looking at the piston with the cocking lever open, there is metal wear (!) on the bottom of the aluminum piston at both ends. A single shallow groove is worn into the bottom of the piston at both ends where the diameter is slightly larger. So I'm wondering what made the groove, and how to adjust things so it doesn't cut any further.
