Training for AP

Has anyone posted a training programme for pistol shooting? What I want to avoid is just winging it myself from bits and pieces I have read, At this stage I can't train with a pistol since I am unlicensed so I need to do strength and endurance exercises and well as whatever else can be done without a pistol.

I have seen samples of the types of physical exercises to do but no schedules or timetimes for progession (ie more reps, heavier weights etc). What mental exercises can I be doing? Any good books on the subject? (ISBNs would be good)

Cheers

Any of the exercises you can read about will help. Just a 1 kilo weight is fine your not trying to build big muscles just the holding ability. put a peice of blue tac on a wall and one on the top of a weight and practise holding it still. do 20 second intervals, hold for 20, put it down for 20. then do 30 second intervals. Do say 10 or 15 then go do something else for a few mins, then resume. you can do some one minute intervals as well. this can carry over to when you have a pistol but put a target on the wall.
If you can get an old copy of Pistol Shooting by Laslo Antal and Ragnar Skanaker, its worth a read for beginners

Don't know about the NCC structure for ACT, but in NSW the State Coaching Council was preparing individual training programmes for shooters.

There is a great coaching structure in AUS for pistol shooters - there for the asking.
It seems to work well for the Indians (after Tibor took it there)

spencer, who do you ask?

was thinking of seeing tibor at some time, want to get better first, as not to waste his time.
I would rate him as our best pistol coach, esp competition coach.
he is in his own class.

Hold is very important. I was about a month and a half into holding training when I purchased a Unique. I went to the dealer to pick it up and while he was doing the paper work I held the pistol and looked through the sights. The guy made a comment about how still I hold the pistol compared to him! It made me feel good especially since he is around 30 and I'm 55.

David, here are some links to articles that I have found useful that I hope you haven't seen yet:

http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Side ... apter1.htm

http://natqa.uas.se/biomek/ref/bullseye_pistol.pdf

http://www.bullseyepistol.com/stamina.htm

Most of them are for bullseye shooting, however, a pistol is a pistol.

Have you checked all of the articles on the Pilkguns site? I printed many of them so I can refer to them before going to sleep. Sometimes I take my FP to bed with me and practice trigger squeeze lying in bed and holding on a blank wall.

If you get the chance talk to him dont worry about what level you are at he will give you advise even if you are a d grade shooter. my father use to spend a lot of time with him while he was shooting. because of this i have got some bery good advise from him. some people think his ideas are outdated and i think they are just plain wrong.

Hi David.

You can take a look at my website, specifically this training page:
http://www.targetshooting.ca/training.htm

It lists links to:
  • Training Overview:
    Physical Training:
    Mental Training:
    Technical Training - Pistol:
If you want to jump straight to pistol technical training, then go here:
http://www.targetshooting.ca/train_tech_p.htm

I have newer material on the subject, but this is what is publically available. Someday, I hope to have time to update the website.

Hope it helps.
Patrick
