USA Ten-Meter Air Pistol Coach Recommendations

I am a new ten-meter air pistol shooter, but am enjoying practicing daily. I want to see how far I can develop my skills. As a new shooter, I haven't engrained poor habits yet, and I want to ensure that I learn the right way from the start.

I live in Tucson, AZ, and am looking for a coach to get me started right and to direct my training to optimize results. I can travel anywhere in the US for coaching, although a relatively close location could allow for more frequent sessions. It may be helpful to know that I am a 52 year-old male with a history of being a good athlete (foil and epee fencing), and have a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology.

I will be highly appreciative for any recommendations for a coach for a dedicated new ten-meter pistol shooter. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the sport! A lot like golf but without the dress code and a lot less exercise.

There have actually been some historical threads dealing with this issue either directly or tangentially over the last year or so.

The good news is pretty much everyone in North America is in yoiur shoes. That's also the bad news- because it means the problem is somewhat err "persistent!"

I would suggest (based on your background) you get a copy of "Competitive Shooting" by A.A. Yur'Yev; translated into english by the NRA. Copies are generally available through competition equipment vendors.

If you read and understand the bulk of what Yur'Yev wrote, you will have a much easier time finding and working with the right coach.

Welcome t the sport. You have all the possibilities to do great. A rifle coach is Don Williams, Beaverton, OR 97007, 503-642-5873. He could possibly help you or recommend someone who could. He sponsors a postal league twice a year. The Fall league should start in Oct. or Nov.

Take it from someone who is 67 and no longer able to shoot up to what they used to, to do all you can while you can. In AP I struggle to make 500 anymore, where I used to routinely do 530 to 550. Cataract's don't help much.

plan on making a few trips up here to phoenix, we'll be shooting a PTO every month at Phoenix Rod & Gun Club, http://www.phoenixrodandgun.org/ all 5 pistol events and air rifle, heck the form has all the events on it so we could conceivable enter anything.

We have several former, current and wannabe national team members shooting Int'l pistol, some of whom could help out with the coaching. and of course the more the merrier. I will be doing some 10m coaching this coming year, although I will make to claims to being particularly good at it.

Plan on being here for the State Championships in November. 14, 15 & 16 I think is the dates, we expect some high profile out of town visitors the week preceeding. You can get the details when u come up here for the sept and oct matches.

Please make a real effort to contact Bill Poole as his reputation is well known amoung the shooting community. You will gain much by any association with the shooters at the NTC and that is really what Mr Poole seems to be saying. The oppertunity is there. Good Shooting Bill Horton
