MG-2 arrives

Received my new MG-2 (standard mechanical, SN 30xx) a few days ago and thought I’d post my initial impressions.

As it arrived the sear was set too light and the hammer followed the slide home several times (with two resultant “doubles”). Adjusted 2nd stage travel and all was well.

After about 300 rounds the trigger developed a strange problem wherein it (occasionally) wouldn’t properly “reset” in sustained fire, unless the gun was tilted upwards or to the side (at which point I could feel and hear a very slight “tick” as something fell into place). Under the suggestion that there was some debris in the mechanism, I cleaned out the mechanism with compressed air which seems to have corrected the problem.

It has digested all ammo without complaint. I put about 100 rounds of Aguila rifle match through it, which I feel tends to be “dirty”, and I think this is where the debris problem may have come from.

Now have about 700 rounds through the gun, and no problems are apparent. It’s taking me a little while to get used to it, but I can see why people rave about them. I hope I’m still as happy at 7,000 rounds.

Welcome to the world of MG2-troubles.

At the range, the other day, during an informal club competition, (a couple of strings post-cleaning of the gun), one round (Eley pistol, yellow label) exploded in the action. It had apparently been incompletely seated in the chamber, then hit by firing pin, setting the round off. Smoke belging out of the action at both sides.
The unusual shot report was noted by other shooters.

The rear halve of the case was ruptured, forming a grotesque sculpture over MG2-malfunctions. I intend to post a picture of the ruptured case.

Two similar, albeit less violent, ruptures have occured at firing the MG2 during my troubled owhership of the MG2.
Vital parts of the MG2 have been exchanged since then. Thought problem was cured.

The clubs range leader asked me politely to stop using the gun, until the problem had been investigated further. Due to safety conserns of bystanders.

Does the MG2 (model in general) deserve a ban until it is redesigned to fulfill safety regards?

We've had cook-offs for years when we used to shoot the old RF (22 short), and nobody complained about safety. I've had a one early detonation in my MG2 right at the beginning, never again, and nothing flew anywhere, just had to shake all the stuff from the breech, and I know nobody else who had them, so no issue there IMHO. Besides, I've seen other guns do that, too, when they had some kind of problem with the firing pin (Pardini, SP20). Nobody ever started to bitch around then. It's only with the MG2 that everybody and his cousin Fred thinks that they know better. My MG2(M), #10xx and still with the original cradle/barrel is way beyond 10'000 shots and going strong, no problems at all. Stop buying it if you can't handle dirty fingers, and for the rest, enjoy the 10s.

I too have seen it happen with the Pardini when the firing pin was broken and jammed forward.

You do nothing but complain about the MG2, I really don't understand why you're still shooting it, if I had a pistol that I was half as unhappy with I would have gotten rid of it by now. [/i]

My (dis)reputed MG2 is not working OK. It is famous for that, hence sales value is very low.
And besides, I do not want any gun owner to enter the same troubles, at second-hand purchase of this non-healty gun.
I´ll keep it.
And stay living in the hope that some day, Cesare will wring out the final redesigned parts, that will turn by MG2 into a reliable gun.
