Aside from the obvious single shot versus 5 shot, is there much of a difference between the two models?

Very different pistols

The P56 is based on the P34, considerably modified in the breech area to accept the 5 shot magazine system. Many of the other components are interchangable.

Indeed, the P56 derives from the problematic P55 which is derived from the old P34 that was not such a great pistol.

The P44 is a new design.

The P56 is also pretty expensive (usually more expensive than the LP50). Personnally, I do not see any reason to buy a P56: the LP50 is an excellent pistol, has the same balance/feeling as the LP10 (for those who shoot both precision and velocity), is by far the market leader and is cheaper.

Well, since you brought it up :) What then is the difference between
the Steyr LP-10 and LP-50? If you had a LP-10, is the LP-50 the same
except it hold 5 rounds?

Biggest difference is the LP-10 has a 2-stage trigger and the LP-50 has a single stage trigger.

55s have some track record for going full auto and doubling .

P55 experienced some blocking of the feeding/cocking due to failure of some internal small pieces (a spring and another other piece). Pistols having this problem must be repaired by FWB service with replacement of the broken pieces. Later FWB then redesigned these pieces and issued an upgrade kit.

I cannot say what pieces causes the problem since the pistol must be opened what cannot be done by the owner.

There are few P55 and even less P56 used compared to the LP50 that really dominate the market.

As said, at least in most European countries, the P56 is much more expensive than the LP50. This combined with the excellent reputation of the LP50 and bad reputation of the P55 makes that very few P56 are sold.
