What sort of work do you do to strengthen your lower back for pistol. My lower back is quite tired on the lower LHS after a match and am struggling on what sort of exercise i can do to strengthen it to increase stamina. If someone has a link to a page with instructions and pictures etc. that would be cool!
By the way, the tips you gave me to steady my hold have worked well - I'm only started AP shooting 6 weeks ago and hit 531 last night at training!

There is a nice australian page detailing exercises for pistol shooting.
http://www.pistol.org.au/Coaching/Articles.php
According to a standard book on training (Weineck, "optimales Training", 15th ed., in German) the training "dimensions" are Strength, Speed, Mobility and Coordination.
IMHO, when someone complains about clenched muscles after shooting I would reason that this is not due to the special demands of the sport but mainly to the fact that deficits in coordination are compensated by the use of strength.
Therefore I would suggest to consider coordination exercises as well. In particular exercises with this:

A "big-word" description for that is propioceptive training. Strengthening this awareness (a huge variets of exercises with open and closed eyes are possible) saves a lot of energy that otherwise would have to be invested to stabilize the stance with muscular effort.
best regards

There are 2 things that can help and give you result very quickly. The 1st is to stretch before a match which will involve however lying down. The other one is working out your abs.

I completely agree. My suspicion is that some of this discomfort comes from my position not being quite perfect. My position still needs work.
Thanks for the useful links

I had surgery at LL4-5 in July, and a lot of physical therapy since. Work on your low front abs. Pinch your butt, hips forward, tummy in and up. Read the thread on stretching. Don't only stretch. Warm up and use moderation. There are simple ab exercises with a rubber tube that I do. Better see your Doctor or Physical therapist
