I'm mostly a pistol shooter, but decided to start shooting with the smallbore league at my club. So consider me a newbie at this.

Last week, a woman from another club setting up next to me had a stand, a box-like thing about 6"W x 6"H x 15"L of wood with felt-covered cutouts, so she could rest the rifle in it rather than just laying it on the mat (or on the floor when it came time to pick up the mat.) Seemed like a smart idea.

I guess I should have asked where she got it but it looked commercially made and I figured it should be easy enough to do a search and find them online. Well, it's not, maybe because I don't know what they're actually called.

Can someone help me out, please?

There is a bipod that slides onto the rail on your rifle and that keeps the rifle from having to laid down on it's side. It is available from just about everyone who sells competition equipment, Champions Choice is about the cheapest. as far as that box I have never seen one and have no idea where to get something like that.

Nicole: I think I know what you are talking about I have seen them myself. What I remember was sortof an open top toolbox on legs, like an old carpenters toolbox but with legs. Then it had a cradle on each end to lay the rifle on. They are pretty nice but I thought they were home made. I have never seen one for sale commercially.

Bill Earnst makes a rifle stand that clamps to the lower portion of the off hand stand.

Several shooters in our club use it. The big advantage over the bipod is that it is easier to pick the rifle up when the shooting pants are fully zipped up. The main disadvantage is that the rifle is on a stand a foot or 2 off the floor and can be knocked off the stand if you are not carefull. So far we have not had a rifle hit the floor.

I have seen kids using that stand and everytime I see it I think I am glad that is not my $2000-$3000 target rifle hanging off the side of an offhand stand.

I know the feeling, and that's what I thought when I first saw them, but we have at least 10 kids using them and I haven't seen a rifle hit the ground yet.

I've seen a lot more scope stands knocked over and several hundred dollar glass bounce off the floor.

Are you refering to a small wood frame attached to the Offhand Stand that allows you to rest your rifle on it when shooting in position. If so, it's called a Position Rifle Rest. My e-mail is r.mendoza10@comcast.net. I can send you a picture and tell you how to get one.
