I bought 500 rnds. of Eley Sport 22lr basically because of the low price for practicing, and it's a name brand.

I get fairly good groupings, but have noticed both audibly and through the feel of the guns recoil that there is a lot inconsistancy with this ammo. Also noticed it's made in Mexico instead of England.

I think I'll go back to Eley Club for practicing. You get what you pay for I guess.

For el Cheapo ammo, I've been using Federal Lightning's. I think I paid less than $2.00 per box of 50 for the crate. I'm starting to look again, I only have three bricks left.

Have noticed same thing between lots of Eley even in the same type of ammo. Can anyone out there point me to any testing on the different types of ammo offered. Have done some with out rifles between Lapua and Elley, and Federal. But would think some body, some place has done a more complete testing. Where would I start to look????

For inexpensive practice ammo I have been using CCI Standard for years.
It's very cosistant and I highly recomend it.

How did you test without rifles?

In any case, all the Eley product are actually different grades of product from one of two production lines.

One line is supposed to make TENEX; the off-spec stuff goes out the door as either Match EPS or Pistol Match, for example. Eley Sport is made in Mexico.

Oops, one little letter makes a difference. Used our rifles to test under the idea that different rifles would shoot different ammo differently. Results showed that the rifles did shoot some ammo better than others, but results were not significant over 100 rounds of each ammo. This was done at 50 ft. Will do again this Spring at 50 meters.

At the Eley Customer Range all testing is at 50 meters. You'll normally shoot 50 rounds from each lot of ammunition being tested.

My experience was that, by lot testing, you could identify one or two lots that would produce groups which were about half the size of the biggest groups from the worst performing lot (in a particular barrel). The results obtained from testing one gun had no relationship to the results you would get from a different gun.

For inexpensive practice ammo the best I've found is SK Standard Plus or Wolf Match Target.

Both can be found on-line for about $2.15 a box of 50 if you buy by the case.

Good practice ammo- RWS and Wolf. Cheap, good consistant stuff. At 50 feet none of it makes a real difference anyway, but this is the best practice ammo for my Lilja barrel at 50/100 meters.
