Should I adjust sights while shooting?

Post by 2002man »

Usually when I shoot I set the rifle on the bench and check and adjust the sights until I'm happy with where it's shooting, then put on my jacket and stuff and start shooting from the standing position.

Sometimes I'll tend to shoot a little low and to the right while standing. Should I adjust my peep sight to compensate for this, or should I adjust my shooting ?

I just got a used Anschutz and am loving it!!!

You should adjust your sights for the position you are shooting in.

If you are shooting standing position you should fire a group of 3-5 rounds in the standing position with all your gear on, then adjust your sights so the center of the group is in the center of the bullseye. Fire another group to verify your sight corrections. When your group is center of your group is centered in the bullseye then you are ready to go for record shots.

If when shooting record shots you notice a string of shots that are all in one location, and all of those shots felt good (meaning you called them as 10's) then it is a good idea to adjust your sights. If you are calling the shots low and left and that is where they are landing you should not adjust your sights.

You should absolutely adjust your sights for each position! You don't say whether you are competing in air or smallbore, offhand only or 3P, but in any case the theory is the same. Your head position and rifle support change greatly from shooting off a bench to shooting out of a position, and the point of impact is going to change. If you need to cant your rifle to get a good head position in standing, that will change the point of impact as well. If you are shooting 3P, you should not be surprised to see a change in each position.

Don't go chasing each shot, but if your groups suggest a sight correction is in order, don't be afraid to change your sights.

Good luck!

Thanks you guys. I forgot to mention that I am practicing this Fall and Winter in hopes of finding some 3P smallbore matches next year.

I'm glad I finally found this site so I can get some questions answered. Most hobbies/sports you can find tons of info and websites, but have found rather few dealing with, I guess what's called Olympic style smallbore shooting.

Sight Adjustment

Scott,

A list of matches to be fied can be found by looking at the National Rifle Association website (www.mynra.com) and the USA Shooting site (usashooting.com). The NC Rifle and Pistol Asociation site at www.ncrpa.org lists places to shoot in your area. If you live close to another state try looking for websites.

I would suggest some of the following sites because they have good shooting information as well as links to other sites.
www.odcmp.com
www.shootersjournal.com
www.nationalmatch.us/

There are many others, as you shall find out, but this will serve to get you started.

Good luck to you as you start out in this great sport.
