A little help

I was recently talking to a very experieced smallbore shooter who said that during prone matches he often placed a hex key or empty case on the shooting mat next to his right elbow (right hander) to assist in correct elbow placement. Is this allowed under ISSF rules? Surely if not illegal it must be unethical to do so. Any thoughts?

As far as I know it is not illegal under ISSF rules, and I don't see why it would be unethical. I call that smart shooting.
I do same when shooting US NRA Highpower (very much like CISM). The two rapid fire stages of the match require you to stand after the sigthing shots, then assume either a sitting or prone position (depending on the distance) to shoot ten rounds in 60 or 70 seconds.
I use small objects to mark the spots on the shooting mat where my elbows and/or feet need to return after standing up.

A view pieces of sticky tape work also. I have a clubmember who uses pieces of tape on his shooting jacket and rifle (cheeckpiece, buttplate etc.) to mark the places foer placement of cheeck and other parts.

I have seen Shistol Pooters tape the floor where their feet go, and one US national team member had little tiny bean bags to mark the floor, so I tried pennies a coupla times (cost me $0.04 when I finished a match and forgot to pick up my feet markers)
I realized that (at least with pistol) one's position/NPA must be verified at every shot and may change during the string, so I quit marking the floor.
If you NPA is on your target, you got all the parts in the right place.
Shoot good.
