Nice start! 2004 was still with the old style .22 shorts though, so Schumann winning with (obviously) his Pardini GP Schumann.

The forerunner of the FAS 601 was the IGI Domino (Italguns International), I still have one and the original documentation dated 29th November 1978.

One for the Rapid Fire history buffs out there:

We know that the .22 short was eliminated in 2005 in favour of the .22lr. But, when did the .22 short first become popular? Was the Walther Olypmia chambered in that or .22lr? And prior to that when did rimfire replace centrefire?

I'm enjoying this thread, it's the sort of thing that interests me.

Sumner Paine (May 13, 1868 – April 18, 1904) was an American shooter. He competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. Paine entered all three of the pistol events in the 1896 Games. He, along with his brother John Paine, was disqualified from the RFP because their firearms were not of the appropriate caliber (i.e. .44". The .44 Russian was THE target calibre for pistol at the time).

Lots of changes for RFP were in the air at the last world championships before WW2 and introduced for 1948 Olympics.

1936 Berlin - Automatic pistols and revolvers of all calibres
1948 London - The pistol or revolver had to be of .22 calibre

Maybe RFP history deserves its own thread?

Here is what Cornelia from the Swiss Rifle mueum wrote to me today about 1900:
I have done the researches (see pictures of the book of Konrad Stäheli 1-3 and the book of Halfmann/Brukner 1-3) on Olympic Free Pistol shooting. I founded out that Karl Röderer and Konrad Stäheli as well used for winning the 1900 Olympics/1900 World Championship in Paris the Swiss ordinance revolver 1882 (see pictures)with the ammunition 7.5 mm for the freepistol event. The museum has this revolver (see pictures).

Hämmerli was used up to London 1948 (see Halmann/Brukner 2).

Sincerely

Cornelia Weber

Director

I will post the pictures when I have time.

I remember having read that in the early OG FP was shot at the present target but at the distance of 30 metres.

For FP 1896OG is 30M, 1908OG is 50 Yards, the rest is the same as now, 50M.

At the OG Mexico 1968, Kossykh shot a MU-55

Photographs of both shooters:
Can you confirm the photo is indeed in 1968 Olympics for Kossykh? The free pistol book refers him shooting with Isch 1. The photo clearly shows that it is a MTs55. So it is a matter of determining WHEN the photo has been taken.

I see S&W and Colt revolvers in .38 were used.

Does anyone know if a Colt 1911 was ever used in the Olympics?

Can probably say Morini for FP, Steyr for AP and Pardini for the rest ;-)

Azmodan, you might be able to trawl through YouTube clips for the missing years to complete the list yourself.
