Parallax term?

Post by tsokasn »

Hello everyone!
Recently the term parallax came in my way.
I read it on Gehmann's guide, and it was refered to no 593 item, called as canting sight system. It gives identical cant to front and rear sight.
So my question is,parallax is the situation that when you cant the riffle and want to move the bullet on the target on either direction(let's say upwards)you must turn both direction's knobs rather than the up and down one?(I know that there might be a problem understanding my question)
Thank you.

Parallax is a perceived difference in orientation of an object according to distance and angle when looking at an object against a background. ie. If you look at an object from one angle and line it up with a particular point on a background, then look at the object from a different angle the object no longer appears to be in the same place on the background.

So in regards to the Gehmann canting system I am guessing that they are saying that this will stop you from experiencing parallax. Meaning the the front sight, rear sight and barrel will all be pointing in the same direction on the Z axis (ie. directly ahead). Whereas if only the front or rear sight was canted you would be looking at the front sight at an angle and hence the barrel would be pointing in a different direction on the Z axis the the sights.

I don't know why anyone would use a canting system like Gehmann's on a single sight though. Anschutz has their sight canting system but the cant is is simply rotating the tube which you look through, so that you don't have to factor cant into your adjustments. Gehmann's is physically canting the sights over so that you don't have to cant the rifle itself to see through the sights.

Parallex

Occurs whenever your scope is adjusted to a different distance than your target and is visable when you move your head [eye] from side to side or up and down while looking through your rifle scope. You will be able to see an apparent movement of your cross hairs against the target. This is the parallex issue that most effects the shooter when using a scope and is why you should pay close attention to the distance your telescope is adjusted to compensate . I have just said the same thing the earlier post described but related it to the shooting enviornment. Good Shooting Bill Horton
