Explanation of term ''eye relief''

Hello eneryone.
I have read many times in different posts the term eye relief.I cannot understand it clearly.Some help please?

Applies only to optical instruments and defines the distance from the eye to the eyepiece lens. For high power shooting, you need lots of eye relief to prevent recoil from damaging your eye or glasses.
