Get into your stance, close your eyes, then bring the gun (doesn't matter whether we're talking about a rifle or a handgun) up into position just the way you would to shoot it. Now open your eyes and see where the gun is pointed. That's your natural point of aim.
If it's pointed to the left or to the right of where it should be, move your feet a little (rear foot for a small change, front foot for a larger one) to get the gun pointed where it should be, then try again. (Same principle, just different details for prone, sitting or kneeling.)
The idea behind NPA is that this is the place where the gun is naturally pointing with no effort. Getting it to point anywhere else requires you muscle it over, which is less stable and will cause your aim to wiggle more.
