How Do I Fix My Sights?

Post by jsleshem »

Hi,

I hope all is well. I am a brand new shooter (4ish months in) who recently got a used gun. The gun works great, but the sights are a little scuffed up.

Namely, when I try to line everything up, I can see a rough edge on the front sight (and rear sight to a lesser extent). I can see the discolorations and scratches. This is making it hard to get a perfect sight picture as I can't 100% tell when it's all aligned.

The variation in color (black where it's in good condition, but more silvery in other spots) also adds inconsistency.

Any thoughts on how to beat fix this?

Thanks!

There are a couple main choices:
* Stop focusing on them scratches and live with it,
* Blacken the sights with shoot or some kind of marker.

Actually, try both options :) Really focusing on the front sight will help them disappear.

Perma blue from birchwood casey.
It´s a cold blue solution that works very well.
Degrease the parts very well before applying it.

I had the same problem on a couple of my guns. I went to The Hobby Lobby hobby store and got some Testers flat black paint in a little bottle, it dries to a flat no shine black.
I have used lampblack and puffed it on them before, but that got my hands filthy. Then I wised up and mixed a 1/8th teaspoon of it with about the same amount of denatured alcohol and applied it with a q-tip. The latter method gives a flat coal black surface on the sights and the bull looks very gray.

A small candle (votive?) will smoke the sights very black, very cheap.

I haven't tried it myself, but some shooters swear by rolling a small cone of masking tape, and lighting the tip. Apparently it makes a fair amount of really sooty smoke.
