Adjustable Cheek Riser Slide

Post by Lacomb »

I want to modify my daughters Anschutz 1413 with an adjustable cheek riser. I don’t want to inlet the stock in the center as the adjustable butt plate posts are in the way. I have seen risers that have a slide and knob inlet on the side of the stock. Anyone know where one is available?

Do you mean something like this?https://www.edinkillie.co.uk/anschutz/a ... 9855a8f2ad

This is from an Anschutz Precise stock. Walther and Grunig both make something similar. Here in the UK a 1403 would cost less than a 1918 cheekpiece, and even allowing for used rifles commanding a higher price in the US, a top notch cheekpiece is still worth a large chunk of what is a junior rifle built on Anschutz's second rate action. I don't mean to be rude, but the cost seems excessive.

I think it would be helpful to see a picture of your daughter's rifle. I've never seen a 1403 with "adjustable butt plate posts" so I suspect it's already been modified.

I messed up on model. It is a 1413. I think that is the early super match. It has a single extractor, and no cheek riser so early 1960’s model.

This is an auction of the same rifle, https://www.rockislandauction.com/deta ... tion-rifle

Ah, that makes more sense. Still, I would wonder if the expense is worth it on a 61-62 yo* rifle A 1413 from this era is a big chunky gun, not ideal for many women (and smaller men), and spare parts are unobtanium. If you are prepared to spend a fair bit of cash, why just the cheekpiece? That barrel will drop into a modern alu stock; built in adjustable cheekpiece, shorter LOP, fully adjustable butt (not just LOP and height) less bulk etc. That stock would retain value better than a modified 1413. You wouldn't be restricted to Anschutz, as there are many Match 54 compatible options: Tec-Hro, G&E, Tesro, Esprit Carabine are some.

If you do want a modern cheekpiece, any Anschutz dealer could order a spare Precise cheekpiece; some may have some in stock for 3P shooters. I expect you would need to trim the top of the comb so the new cheekpiece isn't too high for the sights.

As an aside, Anschutz fitted an adjustable cheekpiece using the same butt hardware from 1973-2000, and sold kits to retro-fit, so it can be done. Anschutz cut the cheekpiece at an angle (deeper on the cheek side). A Field Target ar rifle custom shop here in the UK was selling new copies of the hardware for a very reasonable sum.

*EDIT if the rifle linked is the one itself, the s/n, bolt, and barrel profile date it to 1963-64.
