E-targets (recommendations)

Post by B.p.M »

Say for instance you were going to get 10 targets for an airgun range. Based on your experience which system would you recommend? Price is not the only consideration. Reliability, ease of use and aftermarket support is all equally important. This would be for a club looking to up their game. It would most likely never expand beyond 10 targets. Mostly young shooters, with sporters but hoping to get some more serious interest.

I've used the Sius & Megalink for airgun, Hex, Shotmarker & KTS for centerfire. The Athena and Sport Quantum looked interesting.

What to buy? Perhaps consider buying what is used at OTC (Olympic Training Center) or CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program). Why? Because major airgun events are held at those locations and that is what a competitor will use there, should they go. (Megalink/Kongsberg)

The only problem? When either the OTC or CMP decide to make a change, your club may be left "out of the loop" if not prepared to shoulder that "upgrade" expense.

Or, perhaps whatever the closest university with an airgun program is using?

Alternatively, we have SIUS targets that are over a decade old, and still going strong.

Well that certainly makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of a competitor. That being said, it does leave questions as far as the ease of managing the system, both the software and electromechanical systems. I know a fair number of them use consumables like paper strips, which sounds like a pain to deal with. There is some greater flexibility because it's such a small system. We don't need a system that can manage hundreds of targets. I've looked at FreeTarget but I just don't want a projecting constructing targets.

I will say,...I have met, and spent time with, the gentleman who makes the Athena systems. (Not the seller, in Virginia, but the manufacturer.) He seems to be very honest, and very earnest about his product- including quality control. Athena may charge you a yearly software subscription fee- based on # of firing points though- it was unclear to me. I believe they use Orion as the system controller. That yearly fee would be something to investigate, as far as cost.

I have an Orion software lic already, so would not have to get another. I did ask them for a quote and they were quite responsive. Waiting to hear back from a few others.

I like sius lane. I have 7 for my club and they have no consumables.

That fact that you and RRR have Sius makes me strongly consider them.

That being said, I just ordered a SQ for myself to play around with.

Does anyone know if the Kongsberg target application permits shooting at a shorter distance, such as 7m?
I'm also curious about the differences between the Kongsberg targets from 2008-2010 and the current models. I believe we might have an older Kongsberg at my club, and I'm wondering if the new app will be compatible (although the club likely does not have the original CD after so many years).
