Winchester 52D rear iron sight

Post by James Storm »

What were the original iron sights used on the Winchester 52D? I am especially interested in the rear sight. James Storm jamesestormmd@yahoo.com

I'm not certain Winchester offered sights with the 52, but I would suggest finding a Sam Gates rear sight, it would be period, with exceptional durability and precision, although not easy to find someone selling one.

I think the default option from Winchester at this time was a Redfield International. Customers could also order no sights to fit their own.

Out of interest when did Sam Gates start making his rearsight? I hadn't realised it was so early, as the 52D was a close contemporary of the BSA Mk 3.

Thinking of modern rearsights, but would the most available be the Centra LR? No primarily smallbore sight fits a side rail. So it would be a choice of the various side-mounted full-bore/Palma sights (just RPA, the couple of Aussies, and Centra?)

The 'Warner' design is being made by a guy on the HP Forum. Feedback is that they're every bit as good as the originals. And he rebuilds the originals as well.

Not 'cheap' though.

The shooters in our area who got their 52Ds with sights had Redfield Olympics mounted on the side bar.
This sight was adequate for gallery and outdoor shooting.

While not “period” correct I have been using a Warner smallbore rear sight and a 30 mm right sight forever. From my 52C to my Kimber 82 to my 1913. The Warner SB sight has 1/8 minute click elevation and windage plates (24 clicks per rev).

Mudcat (John Frigugiletti) offers his sights in 24 click per rev and can supply 24 detent plates to convert Warners. These sights are brutally precise, just like the Warner.
